Resolver calls on the social media giants to treat their customers fairly – while fighting fake news

01/08/2018 As the Digital, Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) Committee prepares to hold social media companies responsible for the spread of fake news on their websites, Resolver calls for further regulation to force the big tech companies to treat their customer’s fairly.

Social media giants Facebook and Twitter, along with the big ‘disruptor’ companies like Amazon, Apple, Uber, PayPal and a small number of large UK businesses force their customers to make their complaints through their own websites without governance or transparency. Resolver has heard from thousands of people unhappy with these businesses, yet with little to no oversight and no free ombudsman service the courts are the only way to fight back.

Resolver, the UK’s biggest free complaints website, is also seeing an increasing number of people who want to complain about how their data is being managed, sold, misused or compromised by these businesses. But with no dispute resolution scheme able to address individual complaints, many feel that these huge organisations are free to act with impunity.

James Walker, founder of Resolver says:

We fully support the DCMS Committee’s recommendation of a tax on big tech companies to fund the vastly important work of the Information Commissioner and the Electoral Commission.

But we would like to see this funding extended to cover a free ombudsman scheme so people can complain about data mismanagement and wider regulatory powers to make these businesses treat their millions of UK customers fairly.
