Dating websites and apps have revolutionised how we meet new people, offering convenience and a wide pool of potential partners. But while they can lead to meaningful connections, it’s important to know how you can prioritise your safety when online dating.

Here’s our guide on navigating dating apps safely, both before and after a first date with someone.

1. Protect your personal information

Avoid sharing personal details such as your full name, home address, or workplace on your profile or early in your conversations. Stick to the app’s messaging system as much as you can rather than giving out your phone number or social media handles. This helps maintain your privacy while you’re still getting to know someone but also, people eager to leave the apps could be trying to scam you.

2. Trust your instincts

If something feels off or makes you uncomfortable, don’t ignore it. Your intuition is often your best guide. Block and report the person on the app if necessary. It’s better to err on the side of caution than to take unnecessary risks.

3. Meet in public and share your plans

Always choose busy, well-lit public places for your initial meet-ups. Cafés, restaurants, and public parks are excellent options. Let a trusted friend or family member know where you’re going, who you’re meeting, and what time you expect to return. Some apps also allow you to share your location with a trusted contact, adding an extra layer of safety.

4. Try to stay sober and watch out for your drinks

It’s important to stay aware of your surroundings and how you’re feeling throughout the date. If you choose to drink, consider setting limits that feel comfortable to you, and always keep an eye on your drink to ensure it stays safe. Being mindful helps you stay in control and feel more secure in your environment.

5. Have a backup plan

Arrange your own transportation to and from the date to ensure you’re not reliant on the other person. Have an “exit strategy” in place—whether it’s a friend who can call you with an “emergency” or a rideshare app ready to use. Having a plan ensures you can leave if the date doesn’t go as expected.

6. Use Clare’s Law for peace of mind

If you’re concerned about someone’s history, Clare’s Law—officially the Domestic Violence Disclosure Scheme—is there to support you. This scheme allows you to request information from the police to find out if someone has a history of abusive behaviour. Requests can be made online or in person at your local police station, and you can choose to remain anonymous. Clare’s Law is a powerful tool to help you make informed decisions about your safety.

Dating apps open up exciting opportunities, but your safety should always come first. By protecting your personal information, listening to your instincts, meeting in public, and using Clare’s Law when needed, you can navigate the dating world with confidence. Your well-being matters, and it’s okay to prioritise it at every step of your journey.
