Tourists in the Canary Islands have been stranded because of a sandstorm.

Saharan winds have caused disruption across Tenerife, Gran Canaria, Lanzarote and La Palma.

Hundreds of flights have been affected, with passengers advised to check the status of their flight with their airline.

What this means for you

Unfortunately, you won’t be covered under the usual EU regulations for flight delay compensation.

This is because sandstorms and other weather-related delays are outside of an airline’s control.

If you’ve got a fully comprehensive travel insurance policy, check with your insurer to make sure you’re covered.
