Following a group lawsuit, millions of people may be due up to £70 from Mastercard – even if they never even had one. However, there is now a delay to the payouts due to fresh legal action.
At the end of last year, Mastercard agreed to a £200 million settlement to end a landmark legal case launched by consumers in 2016. Mastercard would use this money to compensate people who would have been affected by excessive interchange fees.
Mastercard’s high interchange fees on transactions between 1992 and 2008 meant that even those who didn’t have a Mastercard credit or debit card would have paid higher prices for goods and services – as the hefty charges for card transactions were passed onto consumers by shops.
In May 2025, the out of court settlement was approved by the Competition Appeals Tribunal and a claiming portal was well on its way to being launched when the plot thickened: Innsworth, a company that funded the case in return for a cut of the winnings, is challenging how the money will be split.
It claims the Tribunal made mistakes and has filed for a judicial review to seek a larger share. As a result, the online claims portal is delayed and so are the payouts.
If Innsworth wins, it could also reduce the amount you receive, depending on how many people claim.
This fresh twist in the case has delayed the launch of this claim. Although payouts are on hold, you should still read up on the details and find out whether you will be eligible.
We expect that an online claim portal will be opening soon which will have an online form you’ll need to fill in.
It should be a quick and efficient process – and it’s unlikely that you’ll have to provide a lot of documentation – like proof of old purchases, receipts or bank statements.
