Whirlpool recalls over 500000 washing machines

Whirlpool has announced that over half a million of its washing machines have a design defect that means they are potentially dangerous. The fault – a fire hazard, linked to the door locking system – has caused widespread concern.

Resolver has been flooded by requests for help from people who are worried that they own a washing machine with the fault. We understand that Whirlpool’s website and helpline crashed after the announcement too.

If you’re concerned that you may be affected, then you can use Resolver to contact Whirlpool.

The recall is for Hotpoint and Indesit washing machines bought since October 2014 – though the fault affects approximately 20% of machines made on or after this time.

Whirlpool has said that people with a machine with the potential fault should unplug the machine and register for a replacement. Vulnerable customers may get priority but for everyone else, it may well be ‘first come, first served’. The company has indicated that the process will not begin until January.

Needless to say, this is likely to take several months, so if you’re significantly affected, you can use Resolver to make a complaint too.

5 months ago, Whirlpool also recalled tumble dryers. Check your tumble dryers to make sure they are not in the list of recalled products.
