Scam Alert! – Texts from your friends and family?!

Upset confused woman holding cellphone having problem with mobile phone, frustrated angry mixed race girl reading bad news in message looking at smartphone annoyed by spam or missed call

It looks like a text from a family member – but could it be a fraudster in disguise? What is spoofing, anyway? Resolver explains.

We’ve heard of a huge number of scams doing the rounds via text, Whatsapp and email – and they can be extremely convincing!

These messages may claim to be from a family member of friend who’s ‘stranded abroad’ or otherwise in need of cash.

They may have personal information only a person you’re close to would know and the message may seem completely legitimate, but beware – scammers could be in wait!

If there’s any doubt, don’t transfer anything! Unless you’ve actually spoken to the person in question, it’s best not to take any chances.

It’s fairly easy for fraudsters to spoof contact information, making their fake messages look pretty legitimate.

In addition, scammers have taken to hacking email addresses and social media accounts to add another layer of legitimacy to their fraud. Don’t be fooled!

More often that not, these scams will ask you to transfer money via Western Union or in the form of iTunes gift cards. Don’t do it – you won’t be able to get your money back.
